Hector Weakens Slightly But Remains a Strong Category 4 Hurricane

Hurricane Hector reached Category 4 strength on Monday and although weakening slightly remains a strong Category 4 storm today. As of 11 PM HST Monday, Hector was located at 15.8N 146.3W about 640 miles east-southeast of Hilo, Hawaii and 850 miles east-southeast of Honolulu, Hawaii moving westward at 16 mph. Maximum sustained winds were 145 mph.

Forecasters at the Central Pacific Hurricane Center said "Hurricane Hector is expected to pass roughly 165 miles south of the Big Island of Hawaii on Wednesday." Although some weakening is forecast during the next 48, Hector is expected to remain a major hurricane with Hurricane-force winds extending outward up to 35 miles (55 km) from the center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 105 miles (165 km).

Tropical Storm Watches are in effect for the coastal areas of the Island of Hawaii. Interests in Hawaii have been advised to pay close attention to the storm and review their hurricane plans. Our previous recommendation to amplify contact before the approach of the storm are lifted at this time. Although the storm is expected to pass well to the south, residents of the island of Hawaii will now be engaged in storm preparation. Suspension of contact is not recommended at this time. However, should Tropical Storm Warnings be issued, we recommend immediate suspension of contact until these alerts are lifted.
