Chris Now a Category 1 Hurricane

Tropical Storm Chris strengthened into a Category 1 hurricane as expected Tuesday. The National Hurricane Center (NHC) reported that Hurricane Chris is located near latitude 33.7 North, longitude 72.4 West, moving toward the northeast near 10 mph. Forecasters expect the storm continue its northeastward motion keeping it away from U.S. interests but threatening Atlantic Canada by Thursday.

Chris becomes the hurricane season's 2nd Atlantic hurricane joining Hurricane Beryl which dissolved into a post-tropical disturbance on Monday. Forecasters at the NHC say Beryl has the possibility of reforming into a tropical storm later this week.

Recommendations for Contact Centers

No watches or warning are in effect for the U.S. coastline but forecasters say to expect rough seas offshore and rip currents near the shore line. Interests along the coast of North Carolina and in Atlantic Canada should monitor the progress of Hurricane Chris.

As shown below, tropical storm force winds (or greater) from Hurricane Chris have the potential to impact portions of Atlantic Canada.
