Second Nor'easter causes deaths, significant power outages, and localized flooding

Winter Storm Quinn, the second of two Nor'easters to hit the Northeast coast, brought with it frigid conditions, snow, and rain to much of the area. Heavy wet snow caused power disruptions across the region. Power is currently out for 450,000 customers, primarily in Massachusetts, New Jersey, Connecticut, and New York. The hardest hit is Essex County in Massachusetts where over 32% of residences are still without power. Power outages in other areas are lower, but some counties still report outages in the 20% range. Power company officials say that in certain areas power may not be restored for days.

Emergency managers say two people died in the aftermath of the storm. Localized flooding also occurred along North Carolina's Outer Banks.

Third Winter Storm On Its Way

A third winter storm is expected to hit the area early next week. The impact of the storm is uncertain at this time, but forecasters fear that low pressure may again develop off the east coast causing the storm to strengthen as it approaches.

ContactRelief is monitoring the area. On Thursday we issued recommendations to our subscribers to suspend contact with customers where significant power outages exist. We expect to maintain these recommendations today, and recommend contact resumption when power is restored.
